In Passing
Jerome Harris专辑介绍:by Brian OlewnickHarris, known for his contributions on bass and guitar as a sideman with groups led by Sonny Rollins, Bobby Previte, and Marty Ehrlich, uses the production talents of the latter for an engaging quintet set. Though Harris had played in more adventurous surroundings, this session is pleasantly mainstream, including a delicate cover of Monk's "Reflections" and a rousing version of ex-employer Rollins' "Arroz con Pollo" (on which vibist Hoggard shines) to close out the album. Ehrlich, whose reedwork is typically professional throughout, contributes a loping, down-home number ("Short Story"), although here, as on several of the tracks, drummer Jeff Hirschfield has a bit of a leaden, soft rock aspect to his playing that drags down the proceedings. Harris' bass guitar playing is always tasty, summoning up the spirit of Steve Swallow more than once and, along with a few other scattered highlights, makes In Passing an enjoyable though non-essential album.
