Roc for Raida
Ah, March! The 3rd month of the calendar year. Plants are reborn. Animals end their hibernation. Spring is right around the corner and people start to anticipate the beauty tomorrow will bring. Yes, March is here! For the last 21 years of my life, the month of March has been of special significance for me. I entered my first DJ competition in March of 1991 (East Coast DMC) and that one decision has changed the trajectory of my life in ways I could have never imagined. But beyond springing on to the DJ scene and planting the seeds to what would turn out to be career full of creative growth, the importance of March in my life runs deeper than any of my musical achievements. See, at that very battle, 21 years ago this March, I met a kid by the name of Roc Raida. The friendship he and I formed from the moment we shook hands taught me more about life than any DJ competition ever could. Through Raida, I learned the importance of humility, generosity, honesty and believing in yourself when no one else does. Our relationship was a journey. There were times we encountered valleys but more often than not we reached peaks that were so high it felt like we were on top of the world! We were best friends… We were BROTHERS! The connection Raida and I formed would never and could never be broken. Even in death, Roc Raida MARCHES on through me. Thus, this March 20th, I “Roc for Raida” and his family! - See more at: http://www.djrobswift.com/2012/03/02/roc-for-raida/#sthash.eTg6Pkw4.dpuf
