The Second Time Around
by Andy KellmanAs if Sa-Ra hadn't spread their output to enough labels (with previous singles on Ubiquity and ABB Soul, not to mention a multiplying tally of productions and remixes), their third single lands on the L.A.-based Sound in Color. True to form, "The Second Time Around" is demented electronic R&B, scoring a seven (out of ten) on the early-Prince-kink scale (daydreaming of pink panties, bitten apple bottoms, general libidinousness). Everything's sufficiently twisted, made somewhat melodic by affected group vocals that swoop and flutter. An active, zipping synth-bassline is swarmed by aqueous effects. "Fish Fillet," featuring Pharoah Monch, is a relatively straight club track. "Thrilla," featuring J Dilla, is an off-center bounce. Instrumental and a cappella versions come with the package, as well as the trio's mix of GB's Steve Spacek-assisted "Simply So."
