New Chi
Born in Flint, Michigan, a historic Mid-Western city that has forever changed the course of man-kind by a single technological innovation that took off at the turn of the twentieth century—the automobile. Flint became a popular location filled with hope and prosperity, a place which Black Southern migrants and European immigrants relocated striving for a better way of life. Towards the close of the twentieth century, many shops closed and went overseas. This left hundreds of thousands of Michiganders out of work. Unfortunately, in the new millennia Flint has seen its heyday of success and many a downward spiraling days of high unemployment rates and an increase in drugs and violence that continues to forge a decline in population. Recently, the city has come in to the headlines due to the Flint Water Crisis. In 2014 it was publicly confirmed that significant traces of lead and other chemicals had been found in the community's drinking water, which is responsible for many illnesses and even death amongst Flint residences. Many lawsuits, resignations and criminal indictments have taken place since. Through the mist of all of this, the city continues to press on. Flint native, Vaughn Davis is the voice of those experiencing such hardships. His music encapsulates all of the hurt, pain, anger and frustration that is felt. His conscious lyrics take this generation of Hip-Hop to another level. He raises the bar for which expectations are held in the Hip-Hop and conscious community. Davis' lyrics makes him stand out amongst his peers bringing a sense of exuberance while facing the social issues and injustices seen throughout today's media. His debut, album, New Chi shows that he is just getting started and has a lot more to say.
