Transcendence
by Scott YanowOn this CD, the combination of instruments really should not work. The trio consists of altoist Sonny Simmons, Michael Marcus doubling on two horns made famous by Rahsaan Roland Kirk (stritch and manzello), and drummer Charles Moffett; there is no piano, guitar or bass. Both Marcus and Simmons also perform duet pieces with Moffett, while the leader is unaccompanied on "Geraldine's Dream." Somehow, the band usually sounds quite full during the spontaneous and adventurous but coherent jams. The musicians are not afraid of melody or rhythm, but they are also free to play as outside as they feel. An intriguing set.
