One Time Out of Nine

"One Time Out of Nine" features two new songs by Chicago musician Nathan Drew Larsen. Both deep tunes are written in Nathan's distinctive house style, which is ecstatic, fuzzy and low. Although the first track "Left There" features swinging beats, the song is earthy and loose, developing slowly over multiple moody passages with the infrequent burst of soaring melody. "Left There" moves between rhythm and placid emotion. Harmonizing flute romplers, echoing electric pianos, winding polysynths, and whining single oscillators all build into dense layers of instrumentation. That "Left There" is not so immediate is hopefully its strength. The second original "One Time Out of Nine" is unassuming deep tracky house. In the words of Justin Long, "its honest." This jumpin' MPC-styled romp is interspersed with lo-bit samples, vibey cv-sequences, snapping analog drums and field recordings. "One Time Out of Nine" was the subject of a remix contest hosted by FOEM.info this Summer and Fall. FOEM did a brilliant job. The odd and slow "Remix 2" by Amsterdam's Wata Kukrowa was the label's favorite. His remix is jackin' and clever, rounding out this fresh release.
