Lost in Dreams
Gumnaam is strongly drawn to those places where the subcontinental sounds of india border the warmest and most ecstatic sides of Jungle. "Feel it" could have been an anthem at Talvin Singhs's mid 90s Anokha club night, which is no bad thing, but things get more interesting when he applies his skills at dubstep tempos. Gumnaam has an unusual facility for making even the most obviously electronic tones sound acoustic, and then placing them alongside 'real' notes. His rhythms sound like they are played by an ensemble, yes their race dynamics remain intact. "Lost in dreams" is a surprisingly effective blend of dubstep's seesawing midrange buzz and whimsical Bollywood samples. But his methods work best on "Blow my mind", where the Indian influence is reduced to just hand percussion. It's a buzzing, sensuos piece of dancehall-inflected rave with subs that embrace and bouy up the rhythm troughout . - Wire magazine jan 2011
