Subtle Swing
The ability to make a noteworthy contribution in more than one corner of the musical world is a firm yardstick by which the performer’s instrumental maturity is measured. The talents of guitarist Hank Garland – a proven performer in the Country music field – have been directed to the domain of small group jazz to introduce his Quintet in this ‘Subtle Swing’ LP for SESAC RECORDINGS. The familiar voicing of vibes, piano and amplified guitar against a romping rhythm section is Hank’s special vehicle for presenting this tightly-knit ensemble in diversified patterns. In keeping with his well defined taste in music, Hank has surrounded his featured guitar with musical personalities with whom he has performed over the years. The newcomer in the group is the sensational young vibist, Gary Burton who displays tremendous facility on his instrument as well as a writing and arranging prowess that is in evidence on several tracks. The rhythm faction merges the piano inventiveness of Bill Pursell, with Bob Moore’s bass and the tasty brush work of both Doug Kirkham and Murrey Harman, each of whom worked on five tunes. The opening side is highlighted by Gary Burton’s unique arrangement of Pop Goes The Weasel which provides the Quintet with a swinging framework for its special brand of jazz. Hank Garland’s fine propensity for interpreting moods is smoothly contrasted in the ballad Not For Me and the pulsating changes of What Am I To Do. On both sides of the platter Hank has a fling at the popular Latin beat in Just For Tonight and Close Your Eyes. The rolling rhythms form a perfect backdrop to Hank’s single string spontaneity and Gary Burton switches to xylophone for a distinctive treatment in sound. Hank combines the nostalgia of Rainy Afternoon with the quiet innuendo of Unless You’re In Love to depict one phase of shifting temperaments. Then, on It’s Love Of Course and Gary Burton’s sprightly riff Call D. Law, the Quintet offers exhilarating musicology in displaying the understated drive which is its characteristic. Now that the Hank Garland Quintet is a “fait accompli” on SESAC RECORDINGS, the young guitarist stands in the unique position of moulding a new career on the firm foundation of his C&W successes. With a patient hand and perceptive musicianship he has unified the instrumental skills of five performers to produce these refreshing sounds. The ‘Subtle Swing’ which has always been a vital part of Hank Garland’s playing transcends his newest contribution to musical entertainment.
