The first of Milt Jackson and Ray Charles’ two joint ventures, ‘Soul Brothers’, was recorded one September day in 1957 in New York City under the supervision of Atlantic Records’ Nesuhi Ertegun and released the following June. ‘Soul Meeting’, the second Milt Jackson and Ray Charles collaboration, was also recorded in 1958 but did not emerge on Atlantic for three years. Atlantic Records routinely used the word Genius in conjunction with Ray Charles, and few would argue. Turning 1961’s big-band album ‘Genius + Soul = Jazz’ around, maybe we could have titled this collection ‘Genius + Jackson = Soul Brothers’…
