It would be an understatement to say that Chess Records was one of the most important and influential independent record labels of all time. Chess did for postwar blues music what Sun Records did for rockabilly and rock'n'roll and Atlantic later did for soul music - finding and nurturing some of the greatest black musical talent of the 20th century and bringing what was originally seen as minority music to a mass predominantly white audience.
