The Aladdin Records Story
The Philo record label was formed by brothers Eddie and Leo Mesner in 1945, but after one year they decided to re-name it Aladdin Records. From the mid-Forties until the late Fifties Aladdin became one of the most successful R&B labels in the world. They added top selling artists and groups to their label year after year, and were consistently in the Top 10 of R&B sales for both major and independent labels. Although the output of Aladdin was not great in quantity, it was outstanding in quality. The recordings of Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, The Five Keys, Lightnin' Hopkins and Shirley and Lee are some of the best R&B recordings ever made and are still in high demand today.
