Drive
There are a handful of artists that defy genre. Artists like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bonnie Raitt, and Tracy Nelson move between country, pop, and rhythm and blues. Enter Chris Webster. this Northern California native's debut solo recording puts her in this type of rarified company. A terrific writer and singer, she brings an extraordinary amount of talent to the table here exhibiting a versatility that makes her album a true winner. She wrote nine of the songs on Drive, her sultry on "I'm Driving" is reminiscent of Mary Chapin Carpenter's work, and it has a take charge attitude that is irresistible. Strong support here by the legendary Memphis Horns really drives the track. Webster's confidence also shows on other songs like"Shake On It" and "No More Excuses." "Shake On It" really cooks with horns again as well. Al Perkins, another legend, contributes great lap steel on five tracks. Webster's gorgeous, simple take of Randy Newman's "Real Emotional Girl" is in itself worth the price of the album. Matt Rollings supports her here, as well as the gospel-like "Angel Choir." Goosebumps. Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel has said of Chris Webster's music, "This is simply the best singing and songwriting I've heard in years." In a time when style often wins over substance, Chris Webster chooses substance to create this eloquent and touching masterpiece. -Cleveland Country
