St. Jude School Music Program
St. Jude Music Program Syllabus Students in the 5th grade Music classes will learn about Music History and practice Music Performance using instruments provided by the teacher: flutes-recorders, mini-keyboards, percussion, etc. Some of which may be available for purchase. At the beginning of the school year all students will be provided with the “Music Curriculum and Study Guide” provided by the music teacher. At the beginning of each month students will receive “Composers’ Monthly Newsletter” and other handouts, such as: “Recorder Method”, “Music Dictionary”, “Music Reader’s Aid”, “The Principles Of Songwriting” etc. A copy of each lesson and the accompanying music CD will be left at the disposal of all 5th grade homeroom teachers. There will be a limited number of additional sources available: Some lessons can be checked-out and copied at the Media Center or viewed and printed from the school’s Computer Network. Some of the recorded music may be available for listening from the network in MP3 format. Selected reading materials (intended for demonstration purposes only) may be available for viewing and download on-line. Students are required to provide their own folder marked “Music” with the student’s name written in the top right corner of the folder. All lessons and handouts will be kept in the Music Folder. Each lesson will be read, explained and performed in class. Homework maybe assigned after each lesson. All writing must be done with an erasable pencil, unless specified otherwise. There will be a written test at the end of each semester. The test includes listening to the recorded music for the purpose of recognition and analysis. It may also require students’ instrumental or vocal performance. Band members are encouraged to bring their instruments and music repertoire for the classroom presentation. Homework and tests will be graded based on a 100 points scale. Please refer to the Student Handbook for information regarding the grading system of St. Jude’s School. The information regarding student conduct and the consequences for not following the school’s rules and regulations are also included there. They will be enforced during the music course at all times. Incomplete work (unable to evaluate as a significant portion of the assignment is missing) will be given a “Second Chance” option. Homework turned in late (“Second-Chance” included,) will result in the final grade reduced by 10% if turned in within one (1) week of the assignment date. However, no points will be deducted with proof of a reasonable excuse. Late homework or incomplete homework will be accepted at any time by placing it in your music teacher’s mailbox located at the Teacher’s Lounge, or by the courtesy of the homeroom teacher. Students are required to keep track of their progress by copying the dates and grades of their assignments to the “Homework Evaluation and Deadlines” sheet provided at the beginning of the school year. “Music Money” for Effort/Conduct will be given to students who listen to music attentively (recorded or performed live,) sing, play a musical instrument, or participate in extra-curricular music activities such as: 1st Friday Liturgy, Christmas Program, Concert Band, Children’s Choir, etc. “Music Money” will be collected after each semester. Students are encouraged to share their ideas and experiences with their classmates and St. Jude community.
