Elbo Club
The recent release of Elbo Club marks Spinster Recordings fifth, after the signing of Joanie Mendenhall and Steph Johnson in 2004. With lush instrumentation and a markedly fuller sound than those of her previous releases, Elbo Club was born after two years of writing and recording, much of the material taking shape at one of San Diego’s favorite hang outs amongst the singer/songwriter scene, The Ould Sod in Normal Heights. The recording shows Saba’s capability to shift from her earlier solo singer/songwriter days, to a fuller band sound, and back again. Although she charts an exciting new territory on this record sonically, the foundation of her music, being her voice and songwriting, is as present as ever. “Recognized as one of the top 10 female singer/songwriters in the 2003 Pantene ProVoice Contest and Best Acoustic Nominee at the 2004 [and 2005] San Diego Music Awards, it's hard to believe that her vocal abilities went almost unnoticed until she belted out KD Lang karaoke-style amongst friends at a L.A. club. For those in San Diego who have caught Saba live, you know that there is nowhere for her to go but up..” – Vicki Marangos, 944 Magazine
