Born to a Ghanian mother and a Sierra Leonean father, Gibril was raised to embrace his multi-country heritage. As if to fore-shadow the rest of his life's story, Gibril da African made a very dramatic entry into this world. At birth he was diagnosed with neonatal jaundice and requird a total exchange transfusion to survive. Despite this rocky start, Gibril soon began to flourish and started rhyming in Lagos, Nigeria where he spent the first eight years of his life. . It was within this idyllic family life and protective cocoon that Gibril begun to unfurl and test his creative wings. Unfortunately life in Togo was abruptly cut short when a civil war broke out in Lome, the capital city. A stray bullet ricocheting off his bedroom window sent his family packing him and his siblings off to boarding schools in Ghana. Undeterred and with more fodder for his lyrical stories, Gibril soon made a name for himself on the boarding school circuit ( he attended Achimota and Adisadel college) as an accomplished rapper and dancer. Fluent in English, French, Pijjin, Patois, Ga, Yoruba, and Twi, he started rhyming and performing in high school competitions and at local shows. His engaging personality and eclectic fusion of a myriad of styles and languages earned him accolades with his fans and peers alike. In 2001, after graduating from secondary school Gibril moved to the US to study Economics in University, hoping at the same time to transform his love for music making into a full-time career. With pure electric energy, charisma, knowledge, and skills Gibril brings strong vibes as he spreads his message of African awareness and the need for African solidarity. By weaving the story of his life's journey and experiences into hypnotic lyrics on powerful beats Gibril is able to connect with and "edutain" his audience simultaneously.
