"Lang Lang is a marvel, his ease of virtuosity astonishing, his stage presence magnetic" The Times (London). Lang Lang s complete Rachmaninoff recordings capture the heart of Russian Romantic music: two favourite concertos (nos. 2 and 3), the dazzlingly virtuosic Paganini Rhapsody and the deeply felt Trio élégiaque, in which he is partnered by Repin and Maisky plus a spirited performance of the great G minor Prelude. Rachmaninov playing of real personality International Record Review (Second Concerto, Rhapsody). The two favorite Piano Concertos, nos. 2 & 3 No. 3 a live recording from the London Proms, 2002 a breakthrough performance for the pianist No. 2 coupled with the Paganini Rhapsody, with Valery Gergiev conducting the Mariinsky Orchestra Plus the Trio élegiaque with Repin and Maisky and a rip-roaring performance of the popular Prelude in G minor. Review by Blair Sanderson Fans who have been collecting Lang Lang's albums for a number of years should look closely at this 2014 Deutsche Grammophon twofer, because these Rachmaninov recordings are likely to be in their libraries already. The live performances of the Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, backed by Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra, were released together in 2005; additionally, the Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor with violinist Vadim Repin and cellist Mischa Maisky, the Prelude in G minor, and the Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor appeared on other Deutsche Grammophon albums that decade. The concert recording of the Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, performed with Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, was originally released by Telarc in 2002. That said, there are undoubtedly many who are discovering Lang Lang for the first or second time, for whom such a collection is a real convenience that brings some of his most popular recordings into one blockbuster package. The two piano concertos and the rhapsody recommend themselves because of their fame, so less obvious choices for newcomers to sample would be the Trio (track 30), the Prelude (track 31), and the Sonata (tracks 35-37), to hear some of the subtler aspects of Lang Lang's artistry.
