Vivaldi: Le quattro stagioni / Tartini: Sonata in G minor "Devil's Trill"
Near the beginning of her career, Anne-Sophie Mutter made a recording of 'The Four Seasons' with Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic, a performance which could be described as charismatic playing of the old school. This new one features charismatic playing of a newer--if not the very latest--school. Mutter leads a smallish sixteen piece modern instruments group--the Trondheim (Norway) Soloists--in a stylish version that makes as much as possible of the work's contrasts and characterizations of natural elements, and is especially sensitive to the slower and quieter moments such as the adagios from "Summer" and "Autumn," which steal in as if on a breeze. Also included on the disc is the fiery 'Devil's Trill' Sonata of Giuseppe Tartini, a famous 18th century fiddle showpiece that sounds somewhat more romantic in its orchestral arrangement but is served up with considerable élan.
