African Bach
by Stephen RaiteriInspired by suffering and injustice in Africa (the liner notes don't specify any events or places), this is an album of rock songs, many of which are heavy on guitar and drums and light on keyboards. All the tracks feature lead vocals by longtime Wakeman cohort Ashley Holt (who turns in one of his better performances, though his tendency to be too strident still shows up), and most tracks feature a gospel-ish choir. Wakeman's lyrics, always one of his weak points, are heartfelt and compassionate but simplistic, and several songs that don't seem to fit into the overall theme are also included. Still, this is overall one of Wakeman's stronger song-oriented efforts.
