The Build (Explicit)
Matt Singer, a Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter, who recently recorded his first full-length studio release and his first album with new label Family Records. The Build, set to be released April 24th in the Family Records Store, and worldwide May 1, is full of spritely folk songs with clever construction. The album’s single “All This Joy” is peppy and twee, channeling a dorkier Paul Simon. Be sure to check out the music video that Singer produced for the single, too. Puppetry and paper clouds abound as Singer and Co. play make believe in a folk fairy tale. Although “All This Joy” will bring some sunshine to your day, Singer’s own brightest moment on the album is the folk hush of “Or Wherever”. The delicate guitar picking is belied up by distant backing vocals, allowing for Singer’s steady tenor to anchor the rest with his strongest melody yet. “The Build” stands on its idyllic instrumentation. The warm accordions and bright glockenspiels make it feel like a pleasant smile from a passing pretty girl. Brimming over with sweetness in songs like “VHS” and “Much Too Much”, “The Build” is an appropriate soundtrack for your summer sidewalk. While its simplicity is a strength, I hope that Singer’s next release has a greater depth of tone and a wider array of sound. But, maybe even as Singer himself suggests, he’s building to that.
