Anime Sweetheart
"[munk] is a Boston based producer and Electronica guru who crafts insistent breakbeats and dance hooks with intelligence and panache" - The Boston Globe "[munk]'s artistry is an accessible mixture of organic electronica and dark hip-hop flavors." - Northeast Performer "...a wonderful doppelganger hybrid of Lenny Kravitz, Trent Reznor, J.S. Clayden(Pitchshifter), and Gibby Haynes." - Digital Artifact [munk]'s genre-defying 2001 debut, 'Anime Sweetheart', laden with nods from hip-hop and jungle beats to pop hooks and pure rock swagger, was lauded by the press, propelled into rotation nationally at college radio and appeared in promos for Abercrombie & Fitch and episodes of The Sopranos and The WB's Charmed. The multi-instrumentalist, who performed 99% of the CD himself, then hit the road regionally with a full band and proceeded to claw his way through the ranks in New England. In the span of six months, [munk] went from a mere "blip on the radar" to opening slots for signed acts touring the region. As the audience grew, fans started to come from everywhere - including WFNX Program Director Cruze who invited [munk] to perform at the 2002 WFNX/Phoenix Best Music Poll. He was given the much-coveted slot along side National headliners for the station's big Summer event. [munk] was also invited to play such events as the 2002 WBCN Rumble, 2002 NEMO Music Conference and recently performed at The Hard Rock Cafe in Boston at this year's NEMO conference. [munk] has recently completed his second release 'Severed', in which he boldly re-invents his sound, shaping it into a melodic and aggressive collection of 12 uncharacteristically personal tracks. "Where 'Anime' was about liberation, celebration and beginnings, 'Severed' is focused more on darkness and endings and the solitude of loss.", [munk] explains. The full live band, walls of multi-layered guitars, ripping, tortured vocals and haunting textures paint a forlorn portrait chronicling a year mired by tumultuous relationships and ending in personal tragedy with a near fatal auto-accident in June 2003. 'Severed' is available on CD Baby. You can also hear [munk] on Thea Wolfe's debut "Take Me Down" which he produced (also available on CD Baby). : : Honorable mention for two songs Billboard Songwriting Contest 2003 : : [munk] won the ASCAP Popular Songwriting Award, 1999-2001 : : 'Anime Sweetheart' was charted on the Top 30 of over 100 college stations around the country. : : "Strip It Down" was featured on The Sopranos 11.02.02 : : 'Knucklebones" was featured in the WB's Charmed 10.25.01
