I'll Try
For its 37th release, Silk Digital welcomes back one of progressive's most beloved artists, PROFF, on the ambitious vocal release "'I'll Try." On the heels of his anthemic, disco-friendly remix of "Searching for a Memory," PROFF has recruited Russian singer Gliss in crafting a much more fragile and poignant tune. In the Original Vocal Mix, a signature rhythm and bassline establish the low-end foundation early, as delicate, autumnal arpeggios begin to hypnotically roll over the track. Gliss' achingly beautiful vocals soon follow, including the titular hook, which is both whispered and sung in the climactic chorus. (For fans who tend to prefer a more "classic" progressive house sound without vocals, PROFF's Instrumental Mix should do the trick.) Ad Brown, who recently departed on a six-month tour of Asia, also is following up recent releases on Silk ("Catching Stars" / "No Other Love 2010"), not to mention a breakthrough commercial remix of Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love" on Sony BMG. His remix centers more on a signature groove, though, a slightly less processed vocal also plays a prominent role. At the song's climax, Ad crafts another breathtaking breakdown, rife with warm pads and gorgeous arpeggios. Silk fixture B.O.N.G., who has captured our hearts with such soulful gems as "Walk and Talk" and "Lobby," offers an imaginative take. A "wishy-washy" lead melodic motif provides the foundation, upon which an energetic groove is built. Light synth stabs and signature pads fill out the soundscape, as some of the vocal hooks are also spliced in. In the main break, celestial synth stabs alternate with the main vocal chorus. Close followers of the burgeoning Russian progressive house scene will already be familiar with Louder Dale, a.k.a Rest Point. His mix is truly one of the standouts in the package, as a bouncy, dancefloor-ready rhythm kicks off his interpretation on a solid note. In turn, the beats are matched in quality by lovely arpeggios, delicate piano and synth lines, and elegantly processed vocals. Finally, PROFF has treated us to a chilled "Acoustic Version," which really shows off his songwriting ability, as well as the lovely voice of Gliss. This one is perfect for the late night hours.
