I'm Gonna Get Your Love
by Justin M. KantorA slightly altered version of Stewart's European release Images (replacing her pop-disco rendition of "Great Balls of Fire" and "Love Is Bad for Your Health" with two funkier, R&B-rooted numbers), I'm Gonna Get Your Love largely expands the scope covered on Stewart's first two albums and is a close second to the album that would follow. Particularly engaging are the title track, a bountiful dancefloor number produced by Raymond Reid and William Anderson of Crown Heights Affair; the saucy, spunky "Why'd You Have to Be So Sexy; and the exotic "Premiere." Meanwhile, the remakes of "Where Did Our Love Go" and "My Guy, My Girl" -- the latter a duet with Johnny Bristol in which the two singers trade countermelodies from the Mary Wells and Temptations classics -- are genuine in intention, but their arrangements aren't very cohesive. Even during these weaker moments, Stewart remains in top vocal form. Her next album, 1983's Amii Stewart, would up the ante with more consistent material and production to back up her chops. But with the singer's impressive balance of elegance and intensity and a diverse selection of styles, I'm Gonna Get Your Love is certainly worth investigation.
