Sub Frequence
Sine formed in the winter of 2007 after some late night jamming in Melbourne’s CBD. Enlisting a loose assortment of local Dub-Wise musicians, the band began a 4-week, Sunday afternoon residency in Fitzroy. ‘Coming in from the Cold’ attracted heads from the inner north to the promise of warm spacious reggae with improvisation and echo effects. The vibe was so well received it became a regular Sunday afternoon event over the next 4 months. Sine have become favourites at festivals, Melbourne venues, and parties, dropping heavyweight rhythms, both classic and original, featuring tight horn work and multiple vocalists. The band has evolved from an informal ‘jam’ outfit to a regular council of dub devotees, bent on creating space in the mix for the metaphysical to present itself, over one-drop, steppas or dancehall grooves, all the while being dubbed live by their resident sonic wizard/engineer Yuval to create a truly unique experimental experience. On the 11th of June 2009 Sine had the immense privilege of opening for Lee “Scratch” Perry at his only Australian show at the Sydney Opera House as part of Sydney’s Luminous festival. Curated by legendary experimental composer Brian Eno, Sine was personally selected by the man to perform with Perry. Here they were able to perform their dub influenced jams to a sold out Opera House Theatre. With strong publicity in Sydney surrounding Sine’s ”hand-of-God” selection for the show, virtually the entire crowd was present for the openers, who received a strong and enthusiastic response from the crowd. Whilst paying tribute to the Jamaican innovators, Sine has evolved with a futuristic attitude to culture, pushing forward the expression of roots music. With members from the Red Eyes, Agency Dub Collective, Morph, and Fatter Than Nusrat, Sine has a depth of musicianship and live experience that allows their powerful live shows to extend out to new and exciting places. Sine has recently added incendiary Senegalese vocalist Lamine Sonko whose African-derived vocal style has added yet another dimension to the band. Sine have recently completed their first EP “Sub Frequence” (which includes a guest vocal by Simon Jerrems from Byron Bay’s Fyah Walk), and are currently focusing on cementing their growing Melbourne fan base, and planning a nationwide EP release tour.
