Kirtan Kriya
Kirtan Kriya is one of they key meditations in the tradition of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. The practice of Kirtan Kriya is said to bring total balance to the individual psyche and to help with breaking addictive tendencies. The music provided will support you in practicing the meditation. I've provided some instructions here but please go to my website for more indepth information. To practice, sit in a chair or on the floor in an easy, cross legged position. Cover your head with a light cotton cloth. Close your eyes and tune in with the mantra 'Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo'. The elbows are straight while chanting. Chant the mantra sa ta na ma using the following hand and finger positions. On "Saa" touch the index finger (Jupiter finger) with the thumb tip with pressure. On "Taa" touch the middle finger (Saturn finger) with the thumb tip with pressure. On "Naa" touch the ring finger (Sun finger) with the thumb tip with pressure. On "Maa" touch the little finger (Mercury finger) with the thumb tip with pressure. The music will take you through the chanting process - first chant aloud, then whisper, then silent, then whisper again and then end with chanting aloud. The music will support you through a 12 minute, 31 minute or 62 minute meditative experience. Translation: SA is the beginning, infinity, the totality of everything that ever was, is or will be. TA is life, existence and creativity that manifests from infinity. NA is death, change and the transformation of consciousness. MA is rebirth, regeneration and resurrection which allows us to consciously experience the joy of the infinite. Recent research conducted in September 2003 by the Alzheimer's Research & Prevention Foundation and in collaboration with the Amen Clinic, an affiliate of the University of California at Irvine, has shown that the subjects in the study showed a dramatic improvement in their brains' anatomy and physiology after performing the meditation. One of the most dramatic results was an increase in positive activity in their frontal lobes, signifying an increase in their ability to pay attention, focus, and concentrate. They also showed a change in the lateral part of their brain - the so-called God spot, which allows a person to feel in touch with their Higher Power. Finally, the study showed a significant change in the master gland structure of the brain. This change will help a person be in positive mood and have plenty of brain energy. Enjoy!
