Broken Cycle

Broken Cycle

This recording is brimming with the energy of a new trio in the studio together for the first time, exploring each others music and finding common ground in real-time. The American drummer Scott McLemore is the connecting link that brought Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson and Cologne-based saxophonist Angelika Niescier together. He resides in Iceland with his wife (pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs) and has known Jensson for years, but it wasn't until he was performing at the Moers Jazz Festival in Germany that he met Niescier. After listening to her album "Quite Simply" it became obvious to McLemore that they should play together and Jensson (known for his work with Jim Black's Alas No Axis) was the perfect choice to complete the trio. With the help of a grant from Goethe Institute Niescier traveled to Iceland for two concerts, the last of which was in the northern town of Akureyri. After a morning flight back to Reykjavik they went straight into the studio, the result of which is a raw testament to the benefits of being in the moment.
