Errata
by Martin WaltersTectonics is a fantastic 1995 release which marked the beginning of the Tectonics project -- yet another platform for the talents of the New York avant-garde musician who fearlessly genre-hoped between serious classical composition, abstract rock, free improvisation, and minimalism during the '80s and '90s. In the late '90s there followed tracts of the electronica, drum'n'bass, and illbient scenes, which created excellent results in this new context. Here the multi-instrumentalist uses some heavy electronic processing on his own loops and grooves, with guitar, sax, and Buchla synthesizer. There are guest contributions from Living Colour/Rollins Band bassist Melvyn Gibbs and vocalists K.J. Grant and Dorit Chrysler. The result is a bleak, bass-heavy collection of short tracks that are best described as avant-garde/electronica, though if one can imagine such loop-based music informed by the New York avant-garde underground, then you know the results are going to be far from monochromatic. This contains some heady abstractions on the form while maintaining a hypnotic sense of groove throughout.
