Static Nitro
The bonds between drum'n bass and dubstep are closer than I previously thought. Static Nitro is an excellent album, but I can't decide whether this is drum'n bass with some dubstep in the mix or dubstep with some drum'n bass in the mix. It's good either way and it got me thinking of Motorbass' classic Pansoul for some reason. Not that the albums are that much alike. This is far from French touch after all, but both artists share creative ideas about how to make dark electronic music without trying to make it frightening or threatening. It's not hardcore in any way, whether you see it as dub'n bass or drumstep. Occasionally he use the darkness to form some sort of mesmerizing beauty like in the two first tracks. "Restored" is a track I imagine Photek would've been proud of. On later tracks like "Mountain Top" and "Away from Here" you can hear the legacy of Burial being put to good use, but once again; I'm not entirely sure what genre this belongs to. Let's just call it electronic music for now. So in any case people are wondering: 2010 was the year the former Eastern Bloc took over electronic music. Along with Lithuania's Eleven Tigers this Ukrainian dude have made a refreshing debut that will make a strong defense against any Chimeran attack.
