Best Of James Brown
The Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown, had countless hit singles in the '60s and early '70s, and many of them are featured here on Best of James Brown. Virtually every song is a recognizable soul anthem, from the slow crawl of "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" to the energized funk of "Get up Offa That Thing." Also showcasing his incredible backup band lineups, this is a reflection of the evolution of funk music as well as a primer on Brown's creative peak. By leaving off the material recorded after this period, it only strengthens the legacy of the material and avoids the ridiculous idea that something has to be included from every aspect of an artist's career. Brown's music is still vital and incredible as it ever was, maybe even more so when its impact can be witnessed after the fact. This is a wonderful album that remains rock solid from start to finish and only suffers from leaving off even more great material from this time.
