Palace Ghosts and Drunken Hymns
Some of the most offbeat accordion jazz you’ll ever hope to feel — a set that’s certainly tied to previous traditions through the sound of its main instrument, but one that also takes its energy in really fresh, new places! Will Holshouser’s use of the accordion here is totally great — and comes across with an earthy feel that almost reminds us of a harmonium at times — not in the structure of the notes, so much as in the way we can really feel the air of the planet pushing through its bellows. Other instrumentation includes Ron Horton on trumpet, Bernardo Sassetti on piano, and David Phillips on bass — and titles include “East River Breeze”, “Irreverente”, “Department Of Peace”, “Drunkard’s Hymn”, and “Dance Of The Dead”.
