Prelude to a Kiss
by William Ruhlmann Appropriate to a contemporary romantic fantasy, the soundtrack album to Prelude To A Kiss contains several recent pop-rock songs, including Divinyls' "I Touch Myself" and The Cowboy Junkies' cover of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane," plus Annie Lennox's version of Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye." None of these were written or recorded for the film, but on those that were, Deborab Harry faithfully performs Duke Ellington's torchy title song, and Frank Carillo and Annie Golden contribute their original "Waiting For Someone." The album's other 13 tracks are sweet, small-group and orchestral instrumental snippets ranging from half a minute to three minutes written by Howard Shore for the film's score. William Galison's harmonica solos highlight them, but they are unremarkable.
