Brazil, Bossa Nova & Blues (Album of 1961)
by Scott Yanow A slightly expanded version of flutist Herbie Mann's 1961-62 group performs African-, Cuban- and Brazilian-influenced jazz on this appealing LP. With guitarist Billy Bean, vibraphonist Hagood Hardy, Dave Pike on marimba and four percussionists in the backup group, Mann's flute is well featured on tunes ranging from his own "B.N. Blues" and the standard "Brazil" to "One Note Samba." This album will be difficult to find but is worth the search.
