Earthwalk
by Scott YanowJack DeJohnette's Special Edition in its infrequent recordings has produced consistently stimulating music. The 1991 version of the group is most significant in adding keyboardist Michael Cain to the band (in place of guitarist Mick Goodrick) and having DeJohnette stick exclusively to drums. The holdovers from 1988 are altoist Greg Osby (doubling on soprano), Gary Thomas (on tenor and flute) and bassist Lonnie Plaxico. The group performs ten of its leader's compositions including "It's Time to Wake Up and Dream," "Where or Wayne" and "Monk's Plumb." Unpredictable and always-stimulating music by the highly original unit.
