What Did You Think Was Going to Happen?

New York City via California pop-soul band 2AM Club deliver a sticky-sweet party bag of catchy, dance-ready tunes on the band's debut 2010 album, What Did You Think Was Going to Happen? Centered around lead vocalist Marc Griffin's smooth croon and pretty-fly-for-a-white-guy rapper/vocalist Tyler Cordy, 2AM Club fit perfectly in that pop pocket between the dance-rock/soul of Maroon 5 and the smart pop-rap of B.o.B. In that sense, there is a lot to like on What Did You Think Was Going to Happen? Tracks like "Nobody's in Love," with its Cure meets Duran Duran dance-punk groove, is an ear worm and earns such lines as "She took control, pushed me on the wall, took me in the stall...." Elsewhere, such tracks as "Flashing Room" and the lead single "Worry About You" find Griffin and Cordy tag-teaming their way through icy, synth-driven dance-rock numbers that balance the band's knack for driving power pop-infused melodies, blue-eyed-soul hooks, and moody-slick MC moments. Throw in a dash of reggae and just a hint of hard rock and 2AM Club reveal themselves as the best and brightest of the nu-eyed-soul set.
