Les temps changent
by Leo StanleyReturning after three years of silence with Paradisiaque, MC Solaar attempts to re-carve a niche for himself in the ever-changing worlds of acid-house, hip-hop and dance. At the time of his departure, he had earned some respect as one of the few French rappers to actually attempt original music, crafting a pretty interesting blend of hip-hop and acid-jazz. However, Paradisiaque finds him following trends more than ever, working slow, stoned beats that are reminiscent of anything from trip-hop to G-funk. Solaar is entirely suited for this style, but his good sense of melody turns the best moments of the album into fine pop-rap that is entertaining even if you don't understand French.
