Els Amics de les Arts
Amics de les Arts is one of the examples of what some have called the new wave of Catalan folk-pop. Their songs are short stories made with simple melodies, touches of electronic music, wordplay and lots of irony. Members: Dani Alegret / Joan Enric Barceló / Eduard Costa / Ferran Piqué If back in 2005 they had known that, seven years later, they would have a million hits on Myspace, they might have started sooner… Catalonautes (Pistatxo Records, 2005) contained their first four songs, recorded, in one afternoon, in Dani’s room. This was the first and the last album they planned to make. But they opened a blog and a Myspace account, did two gigs and got some great feedback. So great that they decided to make a second demo. Roulotte Polar (Pistatxo Records, 2006) was completed a year and a half later. They all went on an Erasmus exchange, each to a different place, but they wrote the songs together through Skype and recorded them in their winter holidays, in December 2007. They registered on Facebook, and kept up their blog and Myspace page. Feedback grew better and better. Castafiore Cabaret (Pistatxo Records, 2008) was the group’s first recorded album. Six self-produced songs, charged with a do-it-yourself imperative. They sent 8,000 copies to the magazine Enderrock and started making homemade videos: Déjà-vu and A vegades (“Sometimes”). Their success on the Internet was spectacular. They start the Castafiore Tour across Catalonia and their music spreads by word of mouth. They consider, for the first time, recording a second album in a professional studio. Bed&Breakfast (Discmedi, 2009) comes out in 2009. They start the tour alone. Fans come to their concerts. They open a Twitter account (more than 35,000 followers) and their social network is growing by leaps and bounds. They hire five musicians for their gigs. The album has been awarded many prestigious prizes. It becomes a Double Gold Album (more than 45,000 copies sold) and has already spent 74 weeks among the top-selling albums. They round up the tour with a double concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana. Tickets sell out in less than 24 hours. The new album Espècies per Catalogar (Discmedi, 2012) ("Species to be catalogued") represents a step forward both musically and lyrically. It confirms this groups as one of Catalan pop music’s greatest champions. In the week of its release, the album also reached number 1 in sales on iTunes and topped No. 4 in the Spanish Promusicae Chart (Spain’s Official Music Chart). The voices of Eduard, Dani, Ferran and Joan Enric delicately weave together stories infused with a strong emotional charge. The 12 songs on the album are composed of melodies that naturally blend organic instrumentation with electronic beats. This is a reflexive album, with new details to be discovered at each new listening. Songs that are here to stay. On March 2013, they were set to write and produce the official song of the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013. Event organizers chose the band from Barcelona to write the lyrics for the song that was played during the major sporting event this year.
