Liquid Trio Experiment
Tony Levin - Bass, Chapman Stick Mike Portnoy - Drums, John Petrucci - Guitar In 1998, Mike Portnoy invited bassist Tony Levin, guitarist John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess to form the supergroup Liquid Tension Experiment. During the recording sessions for their second album, Petrucci had to leave due to his wife, Rena, going into labor. During that period, the remaining LTE members, who still had studio time booked, continued to write music in improvisation. On October 23, 2007, a compilation of jams from those sessions was released under the name of Liquid Trio Experiment. The album is called Spontaneous Combustion. A few songs from Liquid Tension Experiment 2 were spawned from these jam sessions including "914", "Chewbacca", and "Liquid Dreams". While John Petrucci was with his wife and newborn daughter, the trio of Portnoy, Levin and Rudess continued to write music. On October 23rd 2007, a CD of jams from the 2nd Liquid Tension Experiment recording sessions was released under the name of Liquid Trio Experiment. The album, Spontaneous Combustion, includes the studio improvisations which occurred during this period.
